Yellow

Artwork by Isabel Holder, Grade 10

The sun was so yellow but ever since I was a kid my parents forbade me from bathing in its light. Unlike the rest of my relatives who were content in the darkness, I was drawn to the beauty that the natural yellow light brings. All I’ve ever seen of the light is when it occasionally seeps through the curtains, making what I thought was blue wood a golden brown colour. I was never allowed anywhere near the windows in case a breeze blew them open. I found it utterly ridiculous not just the fact I couldn’t go near the light but that they wouldn’t even tell me why. I was so shaded and hidden by my family I never even knew why I couldn’t bathe in the golden light. What was so bad that they had to keep it hidden from me? I decided to investigate for myself and went up to the roof, sitting down just before the light would be visible. I could see the yellow peeking out behind the hills, everything suddenly flashed into colour, greens, browns, reds, blues, purples, black.

Wait… why is everything dark again?
